Hi i am converting from a Powerglide to a 2004r trans on my 59 and need to know the length of the dipstick/filler tube as where i bought it from gave me a universal "fitzall" tube and stick(part K35999U) in the instructions it says cut 1 1/4" from the top of the tube for 200 trans but i have been told by a couple people this is not right, I don't want to cut and have my fill levels wrong

Do you have any idea if a 700-R4 is the same length? I can't get to the filler tube at this time of the year but I can measure my 700-R4 dipstick if it will help. I don't have a 200-4R.

Hi David

I've recently installed a 200-4r into my '60 Impala. The transmission comes from a 1987 Monte Carlo SS so hopefully it's the same.

I've attached pictures that may help you with your installation.

The overall length of my dipstick tube is 26 inches.

I live in Canada and believe it or not I don't own a metric tape measure....

If this isn't clear enough for you ask for more and I'll do my best.

This shows how far past tube dipstick protrudes and enters transmission opening.

Thanks for your great reply, Was your tube/Dipstick from Fitzall as mine is because they say cut 1 1/4" just from the tube(when installed in the car the tube sits almost flush with the top of the firewall) so looks really long

The dipstick came with the transmission from the builder/seller.

If I were to cut anything off the tube, then the bracket that is bolted to top of the transmission (support bracket??)would not line up with the holes....so be careful when considering any cuts.(see picture of transmission)

The tube is also high on my firewall....it is what it is.

Dave
I may have had a senior's moment when I replied to your thread yesterday.

The cutting of the tube makes sense, since it could provide a more accurate reading when checking the oil level in the 200-4r.

I thought of this after looking at the picture where the length of dipstick that protrudes from the tube on my transmission looks sort of short.

So now we both have a problem. Thanks for bringing this up here on CT....now let's see if we can figure this out together.

Could you post a picture of your dipstick and dipstick tube? I noticed that the installation instruction say something about a "clip". I'm curious as to what that is.

The only thing I can think of would be to fill the transmission to specification and then check the level....according to your current dipstick length.

If it doesn't show full, then cut the tube until the desired reading is achieved.

Hi Roger yes that is a good idea, My tube is approx 28" long but a little difficult to measure when it is in the car and fairly tight to the firewall
