So i had a what appears to be carrier bearing fail on my 2006 1500. With a g80 eaton with 2.23 ratio. What would be an adequate swap in this family of diff. Not trying to over improve. Just want to stay within whats interchangeable.
Truck runs drums in the back and unless necessary dont plan on changing the housing. Unless its compromised. Theres is 2.73 and 4.10 and other but i dont plan on changing the stockish wheels and dont want to throw off the speedometer too much if any.
Any recommendations on this. Or has anyone done anything like that. I dont dogg my vehicle’s out either so was surprised when this happened.

Hey Joe,
2.23, typo maybe you meant 3.23? Any change is gonna have your speedometer and odometer wrong.
I'm no differential expert but everything I've read about the 8.6 rear says that 2.73 and up use the same carrier so you shouldn't need to worry about changing that. 3.73's would wake it up a bit without hurting mileage, IMO.
Be sure to use plain 80W90 GL-5 spec'd lube, no posi additive, on that G80 unit.

My 04 Z71 carrier bearings failed about 5 years ago. I replaced them myself but you should be able to find someone in your area to do it for you if you can't. I am assuming yours is a 3.23 not a 2.23.

Thats right 3.23. I think these are the smallest of the bunch anyway and cant find any other than 879.00 dealer ones.
Exact replace is ideal but if i find say a reasons replacement id be on it. While the diff its self doesnt seem bad it might have shavings and crap all in it that may warrant the full replace anyway. Pinion and all that got banged around with bearings snd teeth grinding.

Wonder how bad yours were. Mines slowly started tapping. Then just gave out on the freeway and way able to roll off to a stop. Enough for plenty of teeth to get chinked up.

They chunked out on the races bad enough for my wife to say "whats that noise?" I rebuilt it soon after.

Yeah. Needless to say mine turned into a rattling from hell until it just spun freely. Which is probably as bad as it gets. Just hope the axel case is not compromised.

The G80 Locking rear differential has nothing to do with the ring and pinion (ratio). Its available in all.
Be advised that if its a 4 wheel drive you can't just change the rear ratio. They must match up, you can't have the front and rear running at different speeds (in 4wd).

If you change gear ratios or wheel diameters you can re calibrate your speedo with a computer programer.
I was looking for a programmer several years ago for my 2003 Silverado and found two of them in one lot for sale pretty cheap on Ebay. One is a Jet Programmer and the other was made by Crane Cams.
You can also do a lot of other stuff with the programmers besides just calibrating you speedometer. You can retard or advance timing, change transmission shifting from soft to firm, change transmission RPM shifting points, change temperatures when the cooling fan kicks on, to name just a few that I remember.
If you buy a used programmer you just have to make sure that the seller has cleared his vehicle vin number from the programmer otherwise they are VIN locked. Both of mine were cleared and worked fine.
