Hello All.
Just wondering what others have setup to put disc brakes and and a power brake booster on a 41 special deluxe. Right now I just have the stock setup (shoes and drums), but want to know what other cars/years have disc brakes that will fit the 41.
Thanks,
Judson

There are no kits or direct fit disc brakes from other year Chevys that will bolt right on. And the disc brake kits available for a '41-'49 Chevy car will always come with a later 5x4.75" bolt pattern. So if you still have the original 6 bolt wheels you'll be replacing them with 5 bolt Chevy pattern wheels.
This is one kit for $400 that is a bolt on. But what they don't include is a new master cylinder, or proportioning valve, and both should also be added when you swap in disc brakes. I would always use a dual master and proportioning valve when running a disc/drum setup.

I actually have one of those kits in the response above that I never used if you are interested.

How does a 50's vette master work with disc brakes?

It wont work. Need a dual master, and an adjustable proportioning valve to convert to disc brakes.

Yes, I figured that's where you were going. But another issue with a 50's Corvette master and disc brakes is the bore diameter of that master, and lack of pressure to properly function with disc brakes. Need a proper sized master that's designed for disc/drum system, so it will brake like a car made originally with disc/drums.

Again, correct, the master should be disc/drum by design. I have this set up on my 51, common vette master, 1 1/8 bore, 10# residual plumbed into the rear, matching prop valve of course. Pedal is a little low as expected, a 1" bore would provide a better pedal feel, but the brakes work great, double diaphragm booster also.

I used a vette M/C maybe it was from sixties?, works fine with my front disc brakes, drums in rear
I used an external proportioning valve

Thanks!

What is your end game goal? R U going to stay stock suspension 4ever? If not wait & change it all at once. If staying stock like said above u may loss your 6 lug wheels. I'm not sure what is offered for under floor master cylinder. If staying under floor U will need the proper residual check valves. Don't mean to insult you but depending on your skill level it can get tricky and unsafe pretty quick. Do your homework B4 U jump into a project like this and keep asking ?s.

My personal experience varies. 1962 Corvette lost most of the drum brakes due to dirty fluid in stock MC. Honed and new kit and worked fine till I hit a big run of water and standing on the pedal barely slowed the car. So I said goodby to front drums and went to disc on the front.
Stock MC, no power unit, no pro-valve and no residual pressure valve. Great brakes now and setup has 250,000 miles on it.
When I pull engine will likely go to dual MC for the back up safety. Used dual set up in my 30 rod.

Hello All,
Thank you for the responses and information. This was simply an inquiry for something I would like to do in the future and I will keep this information. My goal is just to make the car safer and more drivable.

Update:

Its been a while, but..

Ended up purchasing and installing an indpendent front suspension from Southern rods with the disc brake and power steering option.

Found a t5 from a 1993 Chevy S10 which fit my 235 engine.

Replaced the rear with a 67 Mercury rear.

Right now in the process of tackling how to hook up the power steering as (ironically) there is not a lot of room to run an additional belt/ps pump.

Not there yet, but making progress.

Thanks for everyones help.
