Hello,
I have the following question.
Which modern lubricant oil brand and type are you using for the following:
- Chassis
- Gear box
- Engine
- And for the Hydro electric pump for those who have a convertible the hydraulic top fluid.
I have all the old references in the chevrolet manual but I am curious to know if there is one special modern brand or type that is recommanded for those cars today.

I am using a general purpose grease in all chassis fittings, 80w in the transmission (3 speed), 10w-30 in the engine, I prefer Valvoline but that's your choice. I am a long ways from getting to the hydraulic system for my convertible top but have heard that automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is suitable. Others may chime in soon enough with their preferences. .02

For the engine I have been using Valvoline 20w-50w High Zinc and it runs great. For the grease fittings I'm using general purpose.

I use red grease for all chassis zerks and 10W30 for the engine. Ditto on auto trans fluid in the top motor reservoir, BUT originally the top motors used brake fluid, so if you change over to auto trans fluid you'll have to flush the system somehow, UNLESS the previous owner already was using auto trans fluid.

I think the OEM fluid was spec'd as brake fluid. It works just fine but is rather caustic to painted surfaces. Auto transmission fluid also works just fine and is easier on the surfaces, if 'spilled'. The pump doesn't really care which medium it is pumping.

If you are replacing all the components, I'd recommend ATF. If wanting to use AFT on existing components, make sure they are CLEAN. Brake fluid and ATF do not mix well.

Valvoline 10/30 with zinc. ATF in the top reservoir. The brake fluid the manufacturer originally used if it leaks out of any fitting, including the valve used to send or receive fluid from the reservoir will totally screw with painted surfaces in the engine compartment. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way when my baker valve exploded. Use the ATF in the tank. But, I recommend if the system still uses brake fluid, when changing to ATF, replace all the rubber hoses attached to the pump with new hoses and fittings. Keeping the same hoses after the switch to ATF could cause a leak as well. Though the transmission fluid won’t harm the painted surfaces of your engine compartment, having leaks when you want to raise or lower the top would be no fun either; especially if the top stops working during operation.
