hi just got a 1979 vet with a 454 in it that i am having problems with with it not rev up past 3500 rpms with out blowing gas back out of the carb . it has a mild cam / holly 450 carb with new hei distributor and wire and spark plugs gap at .035.
it seem this is happening when the 2nd secondary open up if i take the rpm up slow with out secondries opening i can get it to rev up over 5-5500 rpms before it start to shot gas out of the carb . any help with this would be nice

Sounds like a carb rebuild is in your future. Especially if the car has been sitting for a long time.

New is nice but my experience is new is not always correct.
I have run into a Q Jet that failed to lift the fuel metering rods when the back barrels were quickly opened but by going slowly with the throttle you could reach high rpms.
Problem was too much additional air w/o additional fuel.
I would start with, does the back bowl have enough fuel?

Is this a spread bore? Is this a double pumper?
Vacuum secondaries? Have you driven the car with this new set up. Was it the same? What is your timing set up but I am still thinking carb? Again is the back bowl fuel level where it should be?

what city and state are you located in?
its most likely rather simple to diagnose and cure but
an experienced person near you won,t be able to help you out without knowing your location

IF YOU CAN , YOU NEED BETTER TIRES AND YOUR SUSPENSION NEEDS MORE WORK!!
