Can vinyl replacement windows be mulled without a mulling kit? I have Simonton 5500 replacement windows that need to be mulled, but I can't afford losing any rough opening width. I don't see why I can't fill that gap in-between the joined window frames with maybe oak installed with adhesive and screwing-together. I ordered the two windows based on the measurement of the rough opening width, not accounting for any additional width a mulling kit might add.

The joined area would be very weak. How big is the gap between the two windows? The "I" channel that goes between them doesn't take up much space. Got pics?
