What weight oil should be used in a 409 engine and does it need to be high zinc oil.

If I had your email address I could forward you the reply I got from Mobil when I asked them the same question.

It depends on how much wear is on the engine. If it's still tight, stick with 10W-30W. If it's high mileage, I'd go with 10W-40W or 20W-40W.

Thanks Should it be a high zinc oil or use a zinc additive.

I use zinc oil in all my push rod engines. Extra protection against engine damage from oil without zinc. The cost difference is worth it. Non zinc oil damaged the cam & lifters in my 57 Chevy 283 / 270 HP 2-4 motor.

I use Penn grade ( formally Brad Penn) zinc oil but there are other zinc oils that will work.

Thanks Do you use the 10w 30 or the SAE30 I read where the sae30 was designed more for the push rod flat tappet engines.

I use 10-30 since I do drive my cars in cool weather in the spring and fall plus don’t want drag on the rotating assembly in the winter if the cars are started.

Is the penn grade 10w30 partial synthetic high performance oil the same as the penn grade 10w30 high zinc semi synthetic racing oil if not which is best to use in a street car.
