I have a 1963 Impala ss with a 454 and a 4-speed. I bought it that way. the car has very good potential, but I have been working on it to fix quite a few minor problems. this winter I plan to make changes to the engine. I have read somewhere that people buy gm crate big block 454's and 502's with aluminum heads then put better heads on them- I. E. afr, brodix, etc. My problem is that the only header that fits my situation is hooker super comp. these gm take offs will work because they don't have raised exhaust runners. I just finished building 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust for the car and it was quite a challenge. The motor trend channel shows make it look easy.Has anyone heard of any of these take off heads for sale? I read that they might be selling as cheap as 1000.00$ a set. I would sure like to get my hands on a set of these heads. thank you

As I understand it, at least some of the 502 crate engines have Edelbrock heads. And while they don't compare to AFR, Brodix, and Dart for raw performance, they are not shabby.

Thing is, I'm not sure why someone would by a long block or complete assembly and ditch the heads for something better, since you can purchase a short block that's exactly the same.

So my question would be where are all those heads for sale that were purchased unnecessarily? I doubt there's that many.

You might price some Edelbrock heads, they may not be much more than the $1000 you're thinking of.
