Hey Guys

I have a 327 300hp engine with no starter in a 64 impala.
I have been looking for the correct part number in 3 part number/interchange manuals and get conflicting info.
I think the part number is a 1107320, would that be correct for a 64 impala 327 300hp?

It is very frustrating as I don't know where else to look.

Thanks

Rob

The number you think is correct, is for a Chevelle. The correct OEM number for your 300HP engine (1964) is 1107306 1107320.

Part# 1107306 also fits a 1964 V8 Buick Special.

My '64 AIM lists the starter as 1107247. The 1107320 is the correct service part number.

my 38-64 Chevrolet chassis parts catalog shows: 1107320

my 46-64 Chevrolet passenger parts catalog shows: 1108361 as service part for 1107320

my ACDelco starter catalog from 1994 shows:
1107320 as original
1108789 as new replacement part
323-236 as a rebuilt replacement part

I hope this helps you,

Dave

I got this information from Chevrolet "Parts Catalogue No. 205 January 1964"

In this book, it shows part number

I got this information from "Chevrolet" Parts Catalogue No. 205 January 1964 This catalog page can be viewed here...
http://gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=6920

This book shows part number 1107247 as OEM for the 283 engine. It gives 1107260 as a Service Replacement for both the 283 (1107247) & 327 (1107320) part numbers.

There is no doubt in my mind that the parts books have (or had) multiple errors in part number application. I don't know how accurate the Assembly Manual is as far as part numbers. I have attempted to look up part numbers that I have found in the Assembly Manual, and in some cases, they are not listed in the parts book published in that model year. I believe that sometimes, the only way to know for certain is if the part number is stamped on the part, along with a date code.

Hey Guys,

Thank you all for this information!
It was driving me crazy yesterday trying to find the answers.

junky, I know what you mean about errors in parts books. The interchange manual by Paul Herd seems to suggest no Chevy applications used the 1107320 starter before 1965, yet there are many examples to be found with 63 and 64 dates.

Thanks again everyone.

Rob

Junky,

There are several parts that were assembly line installed only and those numbers were never available as service parts, therefore they never appeared in the parts books. For absolute authenticity, the AIM is the best source for an "original" part.

Does the AIM stand for Assembly Interchange Manual?

Where can I get it from? I have a 1964 Assembly Manual, but that can't be the same one you guys are talking about.

AIM is Assembly Instruction Manual, commonly referred to as the Assembly manual. They are available repro'd from most literature vendors and places such as Eckler's, Impala Bobs, etc.

Thanks,

I have a 64 assembly manual from Late Great Chevys, but I don't see much info about starters in there.

I found it hard to find too. Look in the engine section. Then look under the 2 RPOs for the 327s and they say "same as production", (meaning the 283 V8). The parts book just lists the 320 starter for both the 283 & 327.

Remember that the 283 was not an option on a 6cyl car. There was a 6cyl Series with its own list of available options (but no engine options) and there was the V8 series with its own set of options, including all the other engines above the 283.

There is a freshly rebuilt one on Facebook marketplace for $25. It is part number 1107889 with a date code of 2 G 18 (July 18, 1962???.. It is located in Orleans VT. When I look the part number up in my book, it comes back as a 283 engine, but it should work for you. Possibly the seller will ship it to you?

Thank you Junky, I really appreciate you finding that for me. I did buy a rebuilt 1107320 with a 64 date, but 25$ is as good as you could get for a rebuilt starter. I do have a 64 283 as well, but the starter on it is working fine.
