Hey, fellas. On my 60 impala I am needing a master cylinder and I am still running a single pot four drum setup. I currently have a front disk brake conversion sitting my garage, but cant really swing it right now to put larger wheels and new rubber on the car to fit the disk conversion. So, my question is can I use the disk/drum master cylinder from my kit with my four drum brake system with some new plumbing of the lines? I read there there could be some pressure issues, but some people have done this with the intention of going disk in the future. Any advice is appreciated.

Its not ideal but I think you can do what you want for now. You can’t use the proportioning valve with all 4 drums.

You will need some special flare nuts for 3/6” lines to fit the large MC fittings.

Run a new line from front reservoir down to the brass T-block near the left front wheel where the original line was connected. Run another new line from rear reservoir around the front cross member along with the original line to the brass T-block near the right front wheel and connect it to the original line going to the rears with a union and plug the brass T-block with a flare nut plug.

You could also spring for a new dual pot 4 drum Master Cylinder as a stop gap.

I used a '67 B car master when I converted my '63 Grand Prix from single pot to dual. Since it is an aluminum wheel car I will be staying with the 4 drum setup forever.

I would do the job once.

In my opinion, breaking the job up into parts just adds cost and risks. The single 'pot' systems are quite reliable. They need periodic inspection and maintenance, but I've logged 100's of thousands of miles on those systems w/o any problems.

But, if you can't do the job now and just can't wait, the drums need residual pressure check valves (10 psi) in each line exiting the dual master cylinder (a check valve would be internal to an OEM single master cylinder). Those maintain enough pressure on the wheel cylinder seals to keep a good seal. No leakage, no air seepage. They are not used (at that pressure, and often not at all) on disc brakes. Disc/drum master cylinders don't have them internal.

Because you asked for '...any advise...':

In my opinion, unless you intend to race, haul a trailer, drive in the mountains or LOTS of heavy traffic, I would keep the drums. The driving advantage of disc is they dissipate heat better (heat generated by heavy or related use). The disc portion of the system would be easier to work on. That advantage would not trigger me to spend the $ for the conversion.
