I've got a two post kill switch mounted on my rear bumper and when I turn it off the car continues to run...I knew this phenomenon when I installed it. I don't really want to run the alternator wire all the way back to the switch. I experimented a little and found that when I disconnect the exciter wire on the alt after I turn the kill switch off it will stop the motor immediately. So I was wondering if I could use a regular relay that will turn on with the ignition yet turn off when I throw the cut off switch. And if so will I damage the alt in any way.

Did you try opening the exciter circuit above idle speed? The exciter may not kill the alternator output above idle speed.
