I'm about to install the 270 motor in our '50 tin woody. Of course, the "new" motor has a 12 volt alternator, so I need to do the 6 volt to 12 volt conversion. I'm thankful we have a write-up on that. Thank you Bob Hayden!

Can anyone tell me the size group for a 12 volt battery that will drop in to where the 6 volt sat?

Thanks folks!

Might be less work to go with a 6 volt alternator ?

I measured the box and went to the store and found the biggest cold cracking amps battery that would fit the slot, not very scientific, but it has worked

Was going to be my suggestion!

I had a '51 Chevy 55 years ago. It had a sbc283 in it. Once an old attendant popped the hood at the gas station. He was shocked at what he saw! "Hey, you've got a 12-volt battery!" Sorry, I had to bring it up. I'm your age, and I never forgot that. Sorry, I can't remember what size battery was in "The Bomb".

Battery sizes by length, width, height. Groups 24 and 26 are usually top post batterys.

RE: 50hotrod I have a 53 with 12 volt and the battery is 8 3/4 long. Top post. It doesn't fit the bottom plate (too small) and I cannot find a top hold down to fit.

I do not know if the 54 battery is the same size but this is what I did. I took the top hold down to Napa and compared it to the batteries. As for the hold down I got a strap and put it under the tray.

Hope this helps.

This does not answer the original question, but I moved the battery in the 51 to the trunk, in a battery box.

Well I used a 24f I got for $30 almost new. Was too big so I rebuilt the rotting tray. Point: 24f is larger than what fits. By a tiny, tiny bit
