Strange problem with a stock 56 Powerglide. The original (I think) 16-spline slip yoke bound on the splines, had to be hammered on.

I bought a used one from Eckler's, same problem. Definitely binding on the splines, not the yoke OD, won't go on more than 1".

Pretty sure the binding is between the major diameter of the yoke splines and the OD of the tail shaft splines.

The yoke spline major diameter is about 1.172" measured with cheap dial calipers, which matches about nominal advertised for a new yoke.

As best I can tell the tail shaft splines are around 1.175" - 1.178". I can't see any obvious spline twist, bend, or corrosion.

So I either have two undersized yokes or an oversized tail shaft?

Resolved, by filing the grooves deeper in the slip yoke and sanding the o.d. of the tailshaft with 40 grit sandpaper. Driveshaft slipped right on, no hammering.
