I have read past posts about this topic and have not seen any fixes. I have a 2009 chevy hhr. Wife complained about clunking in front end. I drove it and for sure their was clunking and it was pretty bad.

I have replaced the lower control arms with loaded ones which was good i did because both arms had torn bushings in them, a common problem with these chevy's i am told. Thought this would fix the problem but it did not, still clunking.

Next i replaced sway bar links and also the bushings but still have the clunking. The car has been taking bumps hard and has 125,000 miles on the original struts so i decided to replace them as well with new ones from the factory along with the strut mounts. The car rides excellent now but still have clunking over any dip-like imperfections in the road or raised type of curbing.

I torqued everything to factory specs and have looked this thing over a hundred times and kind find anything that is causing this clunking in the front end. Inner and outer tie rod ends are all good and bushings on rack are fine too.

Can anyone shed any new light on this topic or offer any suggestions to look for. When i hear the noise i can also feel it. I think it is near floor boards. Sounds like metal on metal but i haven't found any signs of metal rubbing anywhere under there.

Look at the insulators on the rack.

I checked those with a pry bar and did not seem to find any loose movement. The car was on the ground though. I'm not sure if that makes a difference with a rack and pinion. Also, it doesn't appear that you can get just these bushings. If so please advise.

Also, forgot to mention i changed out tie rod ends too so this front end is literally all new. The whole front end sounds like it's going to fall off when i go over bumps. Motor mounts also changed like a year ago.
