This engine was swapped into a '54 Chevy 3100 in the mid to late 1960's to replace the original engine that needed to be rebuilt.

The block does not have the typical 7 digit casting number on the right side, to the front of and below the distributor. It has not been ground off.

It does have "Con 4" and the date code "D 22 4" located at the rear just above the starter.
The only other castings are a "12" and "GM" in front of the fuel pump.

The machined pad by the distributor is stamped:
"056882 4F54X". I'm guessing that the 056882 is the build number sequence, but the 4F54X ?
"F" maybe Flint, Mich, but the "54X"??? I can find no reference for the "X".

Also, the block has 3 drilled/tapped bolt holes on each side for motor mounts, so does this mean it's a '58 - '62 block?

As for the head, it's an "848" with a date code of "D 12 1" (April 12, 1961). But that doesn't mean it's original to the block. Common practice back then at those engine rebuild / exchange places to swap parts around.

I haven't pulled the starter off to check for a casting number. Were they even cast there?

Any help decoding / identifying this block would be appreciated.

Thanks

Update: The casting number has been found. Apparently for the '52-'54 years the casting number is located at the very front, bottom right corner just above where the oil pan bolts up to the block.

Casting number is either 3835911 which would make it a '54 or '55 Corvette block or it could be
3835917 which would also be a '54 - '55 non Vette block.

This engine is currently setting in my '50, 3100 Panel but with the inner fender well on the truck it makes it difficult to see. Tomorrow I'll see if I can take a pic with my phone.

Now with the date code, serial number (VIN) on the pad and the newly found casting number it looks like it is a '54 block.

Just for the "cool" factor it would be pretty sweet if it is a Vette block. Too bad my Corvette 3x1's won't fit in the truck, rear carb hits the stock steering column. :-(

Since the Corvette intake/carb setup won't fit, going to run this. Rochester carbs on a Thickstun manifold sitting on a Corvette exhaust manifold.

Well, actually I changed the carbs from the BC's to the manual choke B's. Didn't want to drill and tap into the Corvette manifold to get a heat source for the auto choke BC carbs.

The X indicates it isa block from a 1954 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton truck.
The side mounting blot hole are for a 1954 car that used the same cASTING.

That decodes to April 22 1954.

I hate it when the cap lock button is on.
