I recently went to an old car upholstery shop to see about getting the new headliner installed in my '58 Impala. He said he hadn't done a 58 in a long time, but he thought the rear window had to be removed to put the headliner in, but he wasn't sure. Seems like I saw something online that said the glass didn't have to come out. Can anyone give me a definite answer on this? Thanks for the help!

Bob

As the '58 Service Manual essentially covers the '59's as well I'm going to take a shot and say your '58 is probably the same as my '59.
I just looked inside my '59 to refresh my memory.
There is a rubber "flap" along the inside top edge of the rear window under which the headliner gets tucked.
I remember soaking mine with some kind of silicone liquid to soften it which must have worked as my upholstery man got the new headliner tucked in without cracking or breaking anything.......

Thanks for the response, cahartley, I guess no one else has ever replaced the headliner on a "58 Impala

First of all I am in no way qualified to speak to the installation of a '58 chevy headliner. They could have very well changed the installation procedure after 58 & 59 but my 60 had metal tabs along the top of the back glass and the headliner had a cardboard edge sewn to it and that went under the metal tabs. I may be wrong but I just can't see that the glass would have to come out but then again I have never seen 58 without the liner installed. Surely someone with a 58 should know. Not much help. Lamar

Thanks for the response, Lamar. I looked at mine yesterday and it does not have the tabs shown in your picture. It does have the rubber seal, which I assume is what cahartley is referring to. The tabs look like a much better way to do it for sure.

The glass does not need to be removed but all your stainless trim around the window needs to be in place.

"The glass does not need to be removed but all your stainless trim around the window needs to be in place."
Are you referring to the trim on the outside of the glass, or is there stainless trim on the inside too? It's been awhile since I took it all out, and I don't remember what was there before.

Nothing on the outside should have to be removed.
