My 72 fleet side short bed with the steel floor has cancer. I see there are choices like buying a repo steel floor or converting to a wood floor - both expensive and labor intensive.

Since the floor is still structurally sound I've thought of treating it with a rust conversion product then lay a diamond plate aluminum sheet on top of the steel floor.

I would think this would be a popular option but a internet search for a fitted sheet does not seem to exist. I have seen other trucks at shows with this and looks nice (if not original). What I plan to check out is to go to a local metal supply store and see what a sheet would cost and if they would be able to cut out the wheel wells. I'll post what I find out.

I may have found another solution. I started looking for rubber bed mats for vintage trucks. Much to my dismay none of the well known brands make a mat for 60 - 72 fleet sides. There was a universal fit that would work for step sides.

But after a couple hours of googling I came across QuietRide Solutions Link found this - perfect for my needs. Chevy truck mat They shouldn't be so hard to find, a search for "vintage pickup truck bed mats" on several search engines failed to bring them up. It was only going through a couple dozen pinterest pictures tell I spotted it

I will follow through pricing out the aluminum plate but guessing the $209 + shipping will be hard to beat. I went to the metal store in my town today only to find it went out of business. I requested quotes from a couple other suppliers near by.

If you use your truck to haul anything at all (even small parts) I think you will prefer the mat to the aluminum plate.
