My son in law gave me a Bosch scanner for working on my daughter's car. Works on obd1 and obd2. Also works for the CAN system. Came with different cables for the manufacturers connections. Don't know what he paid for it but have used it on my 93 chevy and had no issues.

TunerPro is free/donate software which will read codes, reset codes I bought a cable for it from moates ed/

It works great for reading codes, resetting codes but also will log data so you can see what conditions may be setting a particular code or condition. Eg. I used it to find out my suburban was dropping out of closed loop at hot idle which was causing me to fail emissions. No codes are set for that type of problem.

You have to be a little computer literate to set up but there is good help/info on moates and the TunerPro site. It was actually put together for people who get into hacking the code in the ECM for performance or fun - which I don’t do. But, as I said, it’s a great tool for looking at data stream, codes, etc.
