Ive been having some issues with my work truck, 2001 Chevy Express 3500 cutaway box truck 5.7L.. Im no stranger to chevys and I definitely know my way around a wrench. Ive worked on a bunch of different cars but I haven't had a whole lot of truck experience,. It seems like its the pretty much the same thing as working on cars, only bigger. However the deeper i go, the more differences that become apparent and this truck is my bread and butter so I really don't wanna fu** it up. Basically what I would like to know is

1. Recommended jacking points for lifting individual wheels and for lifting by the chassis (front, rear and all 4)

2. What, if any differences there are from cars for diagnosing suspension/steering problems

3. Whats the deal with the wood supporting the box? Im assuming it acts kind of like a bushing to dampen noise/vibration but it just seems strange to me that these things are actually built using wood. Is it specially treated automotive wood of some kind or can I just go to the lumberyard when it needs to be replaced?

4. Any other important truck vs car differences that I should be aware of. I plan on doing maintenance, repairs and making modifications to this truck in the future and would appreciate any advice you got for a car guy wrenchin on a truck.

The GMT600 Van is basically a GMT400 truck chassis so treat it the same as a pickup.

I typically lift from the front frame or control arms.
Rear from the differential. Close to the U bolts.

the wood is the wood the builder used at the time. it could be anything from cheap pine to hardwood. it will rot i would recomend spraying it with some kind of wood oil, i cant remember the kind i use. there should be big u bolts holding the box onto the frame. the front of the box may be bolted directly to the frame some how. the rear of the box is normaly welded to the frame connecting bumper or liftgate all together. where the big ubolts are there should be something like 2x3 hardwood spacers so as not to colapse the frame when those big bolts are tightened.

70 L camino, grampa engine, g-force 5 spd, road rage suspension. Pray first before all else fails.
