I have a 1963 Impala SS with a M22 4 speed that I want to add a gear vendors overdrive. Has anyone any experience with this application or similar
installation?

I don't think it will fit the x frame right behind the transmission -not enough room.

I met a guy with a gear vendors overdrive in a wagon with an automatic. I never saw under the car so I'm not sure how much massaging was necessary to get it to fit. I remember he said he was using the factory frame and the tunnel wasn't moved. He admitted some modifications were necessary but claimed they weren't crazy. Of course we all have different versions of what is or isn't a big modification.

Sadly I don't have contact information for the fellow. More annoying I typically only see him and the car once or twice a year.

The good news is (at least in theory) it can be done.

Why buy when you can build it better?

I believe that if you have an x frame you use their kit which includes a long tailshaft adapter which places the Gearvendors unit on the backside of the X member.

Such an extension wouldn't fit through the center of the X, and would result in an unusably short driveshaft. The "long" tailshaft housing sold by GearVendors isn't that long.

Sell the Muncie; replace it with a TKO or T56.

A TKO or T56 5 or 6 speed requires major modification to the tunnel in front of the seat on all 61 to 64 Chevys. (the entire factory tunnel from the firewall to the seat has to raised 2 to 3 inches to fit a TKO transmission)

A Richmond 5 speed or 6 speed will bolt right in without floor modifications -I have a Richmond 5 speed in my 62 SS 409. Also retained my factory 1962 Impala SS shift plate.
I will be installing one or 2 more Richmonds 5 speed transmissions in my cars.
2500 RPM at 70 mph vs 4000 RPM in my Muncie 4 speed cars.
