I need the cross hood brace for a 56 chevy with radiator in the 6 cylinder position. I am in Northern AZ.

I was just studying mine this weekend (it's partially cut out), and I believe it comes to rest on top of the crossbar. I was using my fingers to compare the bottom baffle/brace to the top of the core support. If I'm looking at it correctly, then a core support top bar for a v8 or 6cyl car would be in the same place, just whether the radiator mounting ahead or behind. Otherwise, they would need to make 6cyl hoods &fenders, and v8 hoods & fenders, me thinks. I believe you are talking about the baffle/brace underneath the hood, about a 1/3 of the way back with the pair of soft metal rivets on the hood sides, yes? Am I misunderstanding your request?

While we're at it...anybody know how you'd size those rivets? I need some.

You are correct. It is the baffle. I called it a brace because without it, the hood is not stable. I do have the two side braces that connect to the box that the hood latch mounts to.

@swbatt,

if you come up with a source for those hoodside rivits for the baffle, please let me know, I'm going to need some, also. BTW... I don't know if it's true, but I was told by a tri-five restorer that those are made of soft metal to purposely make the hood bend there in case of a collision. Otherwise, as explained to me, it's possible the hood could come straight back through the windshield into your face or neck. I've seen people use properly sized chrome round headed bolts (similar to bumper bolts, in appearance).

@56handyman,

I call it a baffle, but won't swear to it's name, I was more curious about you introducing the thought to my mind that there may be a v8 baffle'd hood, and a 6cyl baffle'd, with the baffle being part of the difference. I was trying reason out if Chevy would have two seperate hoods, based on engine cylinders (hood v's and emblems aside).

Also, I was able to get a replacement baffle ($35, a few years ago) for my '56 hood from a guy who is a tri-five used-parts seller in my area (same guy who told me about the soft metal rivits, above). He had parted out a damaged hood, so I was able to get a clean baffle. You might try the tri-five parts guys in your area.

Here is is called a hood "brace". Only $177.00 from Eddie Motor Sports. https://www.eddiemotorsports.com/product-p/ms274-3...

Eckler's has a '55 version that looks stock. https://www.classicchevy.com/1955-chevy-hood-suppo ...

Real Deal Steel has one in '55 too. https://realdealsteel.com/i-23901652-1955-chevy -ho...

I got to think the rivets are a standard thing. They need to hold the brace secure to the hood. If it flies open it will be above the roof, past the windshield. Any well stocked hardware place will have them, if you can get the correct size figured out. If your radiator is in the forward position (6 cylinder), the after market versions won't work. Would need to see a 55 in person and I could compare it to my 56. I need to swap it to another hood I got from HYPR Bob a few years back.

It just so happens, I have a '55 hood brace/baffle (came in a cache of miscellaneous tri-five parts I was given). I could probably put my '55 & '56 baffles side by side for a photo, if that interests, anybody.

edit: I just read the real deal steel link provided by SWBATT and it says in the comments the '55 one won't fit a '56

Thank you for the post. I have looked at the 56 aluminum braces, but they state " The braces will not clear the radiator hose on cars with the stock six cylinder radiator mounting position."
I have a V8 core support and V8 radiator, but due to the engine being 3/4 inch forward and my Spall electric fans, I have to use a radiator relocation kit to mount the radiator forward of the core support.
I don't think that there are 2 hoods for the 56, but I thought that what I call a V8 hood brace doesn't have a provision in the brace for the radiator hose to pass over the core support, similar to the aftermarket braces that can not be used with the radiator mounted in 6 cylinder position.
Maybe someone can compare the cross braces in a V8 position radiator with that of a 6 cylinder position radiator. I have no cross brace to compare with others.

Thanks for the response. I would be interested to see the differences. I wonder if the 55 baffle/brace could be modified to fit a 56?
I also need to buy a new box that the baffle sits behind and the hood latch mounts in. I think the one on my hood was cobbled together from a 55 hood. I took the hood off yesterday and when I took the hood bird off, the box fell out! There were welds on each side that broke!

I may just have to buy a whole hood to get the parts I need. I have seen that someone is repopping a 56 hood now. I need to contact them to see if the hood includes the pieces I need or if it is just the hood sheet metal.

I will let you know if I find them. Most cars I have seen where the rivets were removed, just had a bolt and nut holding the parts to the hood.

Here is a photo of one of my two spare '56 hoods. One spare has hex head bolts & nuts holding the brace on, and the other has standard (screwdriver) rounded head & nuts holding the brace on.

Thank you for trying, but the photo did not show. I tried clicking on the link, but it can't be found.

I think I have found what I need, but can't get a response from the seller.

Thanks you all for your responses. I just purchased one off Ebay. The seller also sold me the hood latch mount just ahead of the baffle.
