Hello, Im looking for advice on which colors gear set to use on my transmission. I put a set in it a while back, don't recalled the colors, but the speedometer worked for a while, but later sheared/smashed a few of the plastic teeth and quit working. Any help would be appreciated. 56 210, 350, 700R4, 15" tires, and a late 70s 10-bolt rear end.

You have to know the rear end ratio to figure the gear set, as well as the tire diameter, not the wheel diameter.
You may have the wrong housing for the gears you used, which could cause damage to the gears.
"Two aluminum housings are available for driven gears with 34 or more teeth. One fits gears from 34 - 39 teeth and the second one fits gears from 40 - 45 teeth."

I had a similar problem with my 700-R4 chewing up speedometer gears after it was rebuilt. I'm running a 70 Nova 10 bolt. The answer I came up with is an electrical speedometer...no gears to muck around with. It may be a bit more expensive but the speedometer can be calibrated yourself regardless of what rear end ratio you have.

I was thinking about possibly an electric setup, but the price is a little steep. I may try one more gear set up before i pull out the wallet. Thanks a bunch for your advice. I may end up following your lead.

Here's a calculator to find the right gears and charts for the gear colors for different transmissions. https://www.tciauto.com/speedometer-gear-calc ulato...
The different housings provide the correct gear mesh for different size gears.

What I think happened on mine is that the transmission re-builder replaced the tail shaft on my 700-R4 with one that had a different drive gear. I never found out why the tail shaft needed replacement or why they did not remove the old drive gear from the old tail shaft and put it in the replacement. I never had any speedometer gear problems with the transmission before I had it rebuilt. Afterward, it chewed up about three driven gears before I gave up on it and installed the electric speedometer.

Thanks to all for all the great advice on speedometer gears getting chewed inside my 700r4 tailshaft. Most of the advice was very helpful. I finally solved the problem. I shot at the problem from all angles. I noticed a considerable amount of end play at the rear shaft and I also noticed that the trans mount had no bolts in it. The trans was just resting on the mount. So, I bolted down the trans, installed a new yoke. I also put a new bushing and seal in the housing. I reduced nearly all of the shaft end play. Installed a new set of gears and a new steel cased cable. Finally speedometer works beautifully. Thanks again for all the input.
