I removed smog system on 1985 350 in a van30 on a motor home now have backfire problem any ideas

Welcome to the site. The van is pushing unburned fuel out the exhaust. The smog pump added air to help burn off fumes. The ECM is still changing timing. Changing the timing will help. Do you know initial timing? You can change it 1 degree at a time until it stops backfiring.
