What type of masking material (tape or other) would be the best for a nice clean edge on a chromed piece of trim?

Fine line tape with masking tape taped to that and if you need it, masking paper. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/a ll-3m-prod...

Thanks. I will stop at my local body shop supply source to find some.

I needed to re-chrome the ring around the speedometer cluster. The original was rusty and scratched. I had the ring chrome plated and then had a rattle can of green mixed to match. I masked the chrome off with 1/4" wide green tape from 3M then added a wider strip to cover the rest of the chrome. Before I did any painting, I scuffed up the new, expensive chrome so the self etching primer would stick. Then I painted the ring a dark green. This is the first time I attempted anything like this and I am very happy with the results.

I should have posted this photo with the above comment. This is the before photo of the speedometer ring.

That really looks good and I fully agree with spending the money to buy 3M.
