I have a 2018 Express cargo van. My old van had a th400 bullet proof trans. I don't know about this 6 speed trans in the express. Some say that a external trans cooler will help the trans live longer. I do not tow or drive hard. If a cooler is recommended what brand and size should I look for. Thanks.

Sorry JC but I can't answer your Q. What does your owners manual say?
Is there a button/switch to activate when towing?

The only thing better than the 6L is an Allison 6 spd. Unless you are towing a 36' camper constantly, just leave it alone. You have absolutely no need for any "extra" cooling. Put your money into something else. You would be wasting it on a trans cooler.

Of course, it's your money. You can certainly spend it on whatever you want.

I'm just sayin'.

Griff. I just wanted an opinion on this trans. I drive very easy and at this time do no towing. I'll just save my money. Thanks. Your state is about to get more crowded. My son is fed up with Calif and the family is moving to Northern Texas somewhere around Frisco. Just sold his house so he will be there in approx. 45 days.

To be honest, you don't really need it. The cooling systems on the newer trucks were beefed up in the last ten plus years and the computer system will not only derate the engine, but alter the shift characteristics of the transmission to keep you from burning it up. So, unless you are towing a really, really heavy load like a horse trailer or something, you don't need an external cooler.

This was from my Dad's buddy at GMC in Detroit.
