The 55-56-57 convertible sun visor hooks will not work on a 1953 hard top. I was hoping the opening of the hook would be wide enough for the edge of the sun visor but it is not.

Not giving up though. I will be continuing my search for some kind of bracket to hold up the end of my sun visor even if I have to make something myself. I'm sensing a trip to the hardware store...

Hmmm, just checked "brackets" on Ebay. Only 2.1 million to sort through.

Vern,

If I'm not mistaken, the visor just slips off the rod. Why can't you just extend the rod an inch or so with the correct size for the hook? That is what GM did for the convertibles I think.

The hard tops don't have a rod sticking out of the visor blade. The rod is fully enclosed.

I understand that. But can you not take the visor off the rod, extend the rod, and re-install the visor. Extending the rod should be a ten minute job for any one with a MIG welder. The convertible just has a longer rod I think.

I have my hardtop visors apart for reupholstering. The rod only goes halfway on the support side. If i can send a pic through someones email i can show. So you're right, no need for welding as you have 6 inches of a rod you can put in there. 1/4", 5/16th will do

Dman1966 sent these to me to post for him

Hi there John

Here's some pics. So the rod only goes halfway down on both of my visors. Now I'm not 100% sure these are original as i got the car half way done and mostly in pieces.
It's been two years of tinkering but almost complete (See last pic). Canadian 1037D.
So a nice chrome rounded rod from maybe a junkyard would slide in mine.

Cheers

Mine have been re-upholstered. I would not want to remove the upholstery to lengthen the rod.

Hey Ed, thanks for sending me those photos. I can seen now how different the visors are for convertibles vs hardtops.

Sure. This is a '53 Chevy convertible sun visor. You can see that there is a rod that sticks out at the end. The hard top visor is completely closed on the end.

cool to see the slight differences in the models, and not just in a parts book.

Vern, did you make the hooks work? Several of us would be interested in how you worked the visors out.
