I just have a quick question - when the ac compressor goes out, doesn't it make noise prior to this? How likely is it that a compressor "silently" fails?

Since no one has replied, I'll elaborate on the matter:
I just completed a 3300 mile drive with the AC running the entire time. Somewhere around the 3200 mile mark there was a noise and then in the rear view mirror was what appeared to be a large cloud of white smoke from the exhaust. Then the air from the AC was no longer cold and I realized the cloud must have been refrigerant. I was thankful it happened with only 40 or 50 miles to go and the rest of the trip was without incident. I knew the pressure had blown out the system but have no idea what causes that. I was thinking that it's a minor issue like a clogged valve. When I took it in to a mechanic though, he told me I need a new compressor and it'll be $450. I have to give my decision of whether or not to repair it in about 1 hour but I'm hoping someone here can advise me first. I'm a little suspicious because it seems to me that if there was too much pressure, doesn't that mean the compressor is working really good?

$450 sounds cheap for a bad compressor, there is more to A/C work than that. find A A/C shop and have them look at it and fix it correctly.

By the way the truck section is further down the main page.
