Hey!

So I was browsing through the " 1965 Accessory Brochure" and noticed on page 8 that one of the available parts was a " Universal Electric Clock " that is dash mounted.

Now I've known for some time that this dash mount clock was standard equipment ( or at least included) on the famous Z16 Chevelle's . I see now from the brochure that a buyer could get one special order on any Chevrolet in 1965.

I've been looking for one of these clocks for a few years now, OEM or NOS. Yes, they are around if you want to drop big coin, but I have a "conservative "budget and with the currency exchange I need to be realistic.

So my question to those in the know:
Were these clocks available as an option in1966?

In 1966 if a buyer optioned for a tach instead of an in dash clock, and console gauges wth a vaccum gauge was a dash mount clock available?
I want to put one in my car (when I find one for a reasonable price) but was wondering if they were actually option for full size in 1966.
Have you ever seen one in an Impala/ Caprice?

Article that suggests they were:

Good luck finding one reasonable, the last NOS one I picked up cost me all of 20 bucks!
Yes, they were an option if a tach was mounted in the dash where the clock would go, my 66 L-72 Impala came from the factory with the universal clock on top of the dash and a factory 7K tach mounted in the dash next to the speedometer.
JFYI, you will need to cut the dash pad to install the mounting bracket for the clock and to run the wire harness through, might have to drill a hole also for the harness to go through unless its already there.
I also have a new mounting bracket for the dash mounted clock that was ordered from GM when they were available, I don't know if those are available but could be easily fabricated if needed.

Thank you for confirming what I suspected....they were available in 66 as an option.

I've watched Ebay for quite a while and I bid up to my psychological limit and STOP. Most times (ALL) I get out bid .
I've scoured swap meets as well. I found a used one last year but he wanted $1200.00 USD and it was missing the mounting bracket. Yeah ok. I'll go get a loan.. Ha! Ha!

The mounting bracket is available after market and actually the clock is also. I really prefer to find a factory unit at a reasonable price so I can send it off and get converted to quartz movement.

I realize drilling through the dash pad will be required for installation. Steve provided me a back up in case I screw up badly!! LOL!

$1200 , years ago Ausleys Chevelle had them advertised in Hemmings for $65, talked to them at Carlisle where they had them for the Carlisle price of $85, I was ready to order one when I stumbled onto the one for $20.
I actually have 3 of them, the original one that came with the car, a replacement that I ordered through GM that is on the car, and the NOS spare one, looks like those 3 clocks are now worth more than the whole car cost new!
You mentioned that the Z-16 Chevelle had them, If I remember correctly I saw one here and there on other 65 Chevelle's also, not just the Z-16. I don't remember ever seeing one on a 65 full size, just the 65 Chevelle's and the 66 full size.

The dash mounted universal clock was not a stand alone option in 1966. As indicated if you ordered the U16 tach and did not have the D59 or A51 gauge package you would have the dash mounted clock. If you had gauges you would have the clock installed in the gauge package in lieu of the manifold gauge. However, the 1966 universal clock acc. Part # 986617 was available as a dealer installed accessory. The 1965 accessory part number shows as # 986311.
