I've been working on swapping my 350 to a 454 in my 65 bel air. The engine goes in and bolts up but the exahust hits the steering box. Do I need different motor mounts? Is there headers that clear it?

Jacob

Yes.....bought Hooker Super Comps
Rubbed on the idler arm and steering box
So close to some of the plugs the wires would be rubbing
Got sick of cutting them up, ordered a set of repo L72 cast iron manifolds...perfect
Motor in stock location, stock mounts
Be Careful...
I would suggest trying to find someone that has headers that fit and repeat their good fortune

Do you have a picture of the manifolds or a link to them? That way I can order the right ones. Thanks

First, what BB did you put in as far exhaust manifolds as they are Impala / B body only, right side part # 3872702 and left side 3892307, don't assume any manifolds will fit out of any BB! common mistake.

As far as L72 exhaust manifolds, yes they will work, very expensive (unless they have come way down in price? I don't know) if you have purchased exhaust pipes, the front pipes may not work L35 - L36 L35 would have been 65'

And next question, be sure you don't have a/c as I although not positive, not sure they would work with factory a/c brackets, as I believe usually L72 did not come with A/C, again .... not positive.
The hardest part in my opinion is coming up with the correct pulleys, p/s bracket, and a/c brackets, I wanted it to look factory, so ended up obtaining the correct brackets by in my case was buying a donor car, came with fan shroud fan blade, etc. etc.
As I am finding out, to make it look correct is harder than buying all aftermarket .... if it is just the exhaust manifolds, may be a simple solution, and long or short water pump, will determine your pulley setup, and whether you want it stock in appearance? or custom, but figure out where you want your alternator, and a/c if you have it, p/d shouldn't be a problem but don't know if that is a p/s car.

Moral of story, I am not as familiar with the 1965 as I am with the 67, but back when I did my 59, I know the 58 was a completely different animal underneath, (obviously in looks too ) being a new year in 65 lots of changes would be made, and people say all 65-70 stuff will interchange, they clearly don't know these cars!
Let us know how you did, I am in process of changing to BB as well and finding out more than I honestly care to

my 2 cents, correct in appearance or not is the question....

Chevelle exhaust manifolds will not work!

Impala L-35 is a 396, L-36 is a 427, 454 same dimensions block wise and head wise unless you possibly have some aftermarket heads with roller rockers, then you may have issues with tall valve covers hitting brake booster, again not sure to the Chevelle model, but is a possibility.

The L-35 and L-36 Impala manifolds are usually available on eBay Used , so the L72 high horse power manifolds will work but pricey, used 396 and 427 exhaust manifolds won't hit p/s gear, double check if 65's are same part number for the idler arm they seem to have so much trouble with?
Maybe some one will chime in, and they will cost allot less, unless the L-72 manifolds have dropped drastically in price!

Good Luck!

Jacob, if your car had a V8 engine (65-66) it's a drop in with no need to change the "perches".

I use Hooker Super Comp headers (2457) with no fitment issues.

Thanks for your post and the Hooker header part number
Mine looked nothing like yours. I checked and they don't offer my part number anymore.
Probly for good reasons..
Your car is beautiful by the way

The headers hit on the steering box still. I ordered the hooker 2457. The ones that say 65 full size chevy. Any ideas? The motor seems to far to the left when you're under the car. I'm very confused. The headers also hit the head bolts.

I just went from a 283 to a 427 and I bought used L72 manifolds. I've never liked headers because of the maintenance. These manifolds fit great.

I have had headers hit head bolts before. Something was off in the manufacturing. I took a grinder to the flange and ground some clearance into it. Some '67-'69 Camaro headers fit. I have a vintage set of Casler #326 on my '65 belair 454 with a muncie 4 speed. Perfect fit! 2"primary with 3.5"collector flanges.
