The speedometer in my 1962 C10 works fine about half the time. The other half the time, it makes a grinding noise and the needle bounces around. Often when bouncing it only bounces about 10mph either way. But sometimes, it will bounce all over the speed range. (From 0 to 80 or 90 when doing only 35mph) The noise sounds like it is coming from under the dash or in the dash itself. (Hard to tell because I'm always driving when it happens.) Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I'm guessing the easiest thing to do is replace the speedometer cable. If that's not it any ideas?

Sounds like the cable needs lubrication or replacement. Try removing the cable and coat it with graphite (speedometer lube). Make sure the cable housing isn't kinked anywhere. If lubrication doesn't correct it, replace the cable. Last resort is replacing the speedometer head if the cable isn't the problem.

Or the speedo head itself needs to be greased. My '64 panel used to do that when it was cold outside.

Thanks for the feedback all. I replaced the speedometer cable but that didn't fix anything. But with time the bouncing has greatly decreased and the noise has stopped. Of course, the odometer has stopped too. (Stuck at 59999.9) So, I'm pretty sure that the odometer is frozen and that whatever gears were in there are stripped by now. So... I guess I'm in the market for a 1962 odometer. More than likely I'll have to find a used dash from somewhere.
