What are the correct light bulbs for the tail and brake lights on a '36 sedan? Also, are there any 6v LEDs that will fit/work?
thanks

Ken,

Contrary to "expert" statements to the contrary there are halogen bulbs that a '36 generator can power no sweat. I have them in my '36 PU. Here's more on that subject:

I'm in Santa Rosa (Sonoma County) so we're practically neighbors.

Ray, thanks and I will study that more, but my concern at the moment is with the tail/brake lights. The Filling Station only has 12v LEDs and the other bulbs all say brake, tail light or turn signal, so I assume that they are all the same brightness. I may be wrong, but I would think the brake light would be brighter than the tail light bulb, but maybe the thought was just an extra bulb was enough. That's why I'm asking the question.

The correct number for the tail lamp bulbs should be 1158. Same as 12 volt 1157, except the last digit.

The 1158 bulb is a double element bulb. The 36 Chevy requires two single element bulbs, one each for the tail light and brake light.

Ken,

If you find bright 6 volt LED bulbs would you mind passing that information on to me?

The link I sent you has information on how to upgrade your generator with a real voltage regulator that hides inside the generator. It is a HUGE improvement and makes your generator work like a normal generator or alternator. Instead of making less current as it revs up it will make more and it reduces the charging rate as the battery becomes more fully charged.

It's amazing to me that the "originality" stuffed shirts shun that part because it's not "original". It makes no difference to them that it's totally hidden inside the generator.

Most of them definitely did not approve of this project that I did:

I guess that improving function makes no difference on a trailer queen.

Ray, I'm still looking for a LED bulb that will fit. Most are too long and/or double element, so for now I'm just using a T63 6v bulb for the brake, and the T83 which I'm told is 12v and came in the car, for the tail light.

If they're single filament on a '36 then they're 1129 lamps.

1971BB, no disrespect, but you obviously aren't familiar with a 36 Chevy. The 1129 bulb is far too big. The T63 that is in it now, just barely fits. It's a hair over 1" long. The 1129 is 2" long. These are not much bigger than a dash light bulb.

BearsFan, I see that they may have what I want, but I will have to call them to verify the overall length. Thanks, Ken

call and check, i know my 1929 uses the 63 & 55 bulbs, but you may have tighter space constraints

hopefully they will work out for you

Yes, I am using the 63 bulbs, but I was hoping to find some LEDs that would fit. The Filling Station has a complete LED taillight/brake unit that I have seen, so I may go that way.

Lambert Enterprises makes the LED kits, and everyone else sells them. i got mine via TFS as well for my 1929. really nice kit, i did NOT hard wire mine, i used existing connectors !!

Ken,

Have you been successful in finding bright 6 volt bulbs that will fit in a '36 tail light?

On the subject of brakes/brake lights I did a tandem MC conversion in my '36 PU that gives me a feeling of increased safety. I'd be glad to share the details if you're interested.

Thanks!

Ray W
