but you may want to call a garage door company for the parts and replacement labor,if your not familiar with the deal

Save yourself some time and maybe even some money and have an over head door company do it. Don't ask me why I think this way!

this door is allot bigger than a garage door. just got a quote at 1030 pm. 5.2k im probly gonna do this one myself with a bit of help. everyone says get a pro to do it. well the last pro mounted the drive motor assembly half assed. i see this kinda crap all the time. i am not a pro at this but im sure that i can get very good results if i apply myself. its what i have always done and its made me who i am. and 5.2k is a whole bunch of lunch money.

Wow, $5200 to replace a spring. That should get you a whole new door. I've done a few, but not on a door that big yet. I's not terribly difficult. Just go slowly and methodically. Make sure you have long enough winding bars and that they fit snugly into the winding holes. Make sure each bar bottoms in the hole when you move it as you are winding. I would suggest clearly marking the bar so you can can tell when it's in all the way. Use a solid ladder and keep back from the spring and out of line of anything that can spin or fly apart. Never use a socket or boxed end wrench on the set-screws so the wrench doesn't become a projectile.

Figuring out what direction to wind - Face the spring coil end you're winding at with the wire end at the bottom. The direction the coil end is facing is the direction to wind. If it points right then you wind it right or clockwise. Wind left if it points left. Generally, if the spring end to be wound is at the left side of the spring with the end attached to the wall on the right side then you wind the spring right.

As far as number of turns. count the number of times the cables go around the pulleys and wind the spring about that number, maybe 1 more turn. Test it, it should drop when lifted opened a foot or two but not be very heavy to lift open. If the door starts opening by itself at any point through the travel then it's wound too tight.

Google garage door spring replacement and you can find more good info than you could ever view or read.

well its actualy 2 springs. the big one is about 100 pounds. finaly found someone who would make them for me. many thanks to Karl at Diamond Wire Spring Company. goterdun for less than 1300. shipping was killer. reconfigerred the motor mount so it wouldnt do the death wobble. fixed the motor brake and the gearbox oil leak. it was an interesting project. i like doing different stuff than my everyday grind.
