so how does one go about using a 56 265 along w/ a 700r4? I've seen posts here discussing this but no discussion concerning the torque conv attachment being three bolts on 700's and four on earlier stuff... We are putting the 56 in a 89 corvette... any thoughts...?? thanks I know we are crazy but Doug

There is really only ONE WAY to do this. You have to purchase the COMPLETE kit to install a 55-56, 265 up against any modern aluminum automatic transmission; you have to buy the adapter kit that consists of a blanchard ground adapter ring, and they usually include the fasteners, AND an adapter for the torque converter to seat the torque converter properly with. You will also have to use the bellhousing mounted starter motor used through 1962 (with the 283 engine), or in some cases, later year trucks. Anyone who tells you the block can be "machined" for a block mounted starter motor, does not know what they are talking about! The starter motor adapter ring and kit used to cost around $100.00; it's now around $130.00 on E-Bay. At least with a 57 and newer block (265 or 283) you CAN use a block mounted starter motor. Now, I'm sure there are guys out there that had access to equipment, and the time and money, to re-do the 265 for a block mounted starter motor, but it is not financially prudent to even attempt it. "Nuff said", as my Mother would say. E-Bay # 123699588764 is an example, but you should be able to find it CHEAPER from any of the Tri-Five vendors. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Hello Mr. Sedan,,,, I used to have a 55 150 utility sedan and many years ago a 210 w/ a 327... this project is an 89 vette that has a burned up motor... bad. An ex Marine mechanic who raced a lot in the Barstow area built a 265 that he raced for a while and then after moving back home (this area) he put the engine away.. this was thirty five years ago... I has a set of undrilled power pack 59 heads and the block comes up as a Corvette 56 265 engine.... This fella knows his stuff, and being 75 now decided to give me ,, yes give me this engine as I told him we wanted to put it in the 89... so... thanks so much fo the info... Summit has been a bit lame w/ tech... I will let u know how it goes.... Doug.. nice site bud,, ps what is a tri vendor?

A tri-five vendor specializes in 55, 56, and 57 chevys since these 3 years are so much alike. Since the 265 is unique to these 3 years, they will have some parts for that engine. Eckler's, Danchuk, H&H Classic, East Coast Chevy are some examples.
You are aware that the 265 does not have side motor mounts. It is mounted at the front mounts, which are close to the center line of the engine, causing lots of engine torque to twist the engine on it's mounts. And there may be a place to mount the front mounts on a Corvette frame.

The 56 and 57 265's had a block mounted oil filter although it was optional. Link to oil filter.

yes that is an issue but the front mounts are directly above the main front crossmember on the 89 so that should work well... but what of the rear? this car does not have a rear mount on the tranny or anywhere... it appears to be held up by the torque arm attached to the tranny and the rear end. is this correct and if so what is there to do now? maybe a chain from floorboard to floorboard.... lol hey thanks for all the info,,, I"m gathering part number from ecklers including starter. Going with old school alum mani and carb... headers etc... no rear mount ,,, what the ????

Hello;
Saw this kind of conversion done to an old chevy pick up truck by one of the car shows! All I know is that with the 700 r trans it sure made the pick up Boot/Scoot way better and highway driving was way better!! Especially after you hook up the lock up!!!
Hope you find a way to get this done!! Many smiles to come!!!

Bruce
