Working on a 55 Sedan. Original rearend and leaf springs, original rear wheel openings, no bent wheel opening lips. Using 17" wheels. Owner wants as big a tire as will fit without bending the wheel opening lips. So for the rear tires, what backspacing have you used and what size tire on your 55? And what size and backspacing worked on the front for you? Again, these are 17" wheels.

This question is probably specific to 55's, since the rears wheel openings on a 55 are less open than 56 and 57. Thanks!

When I had 17" rims on the back of my '55, with the stock rear end, leafs, and wheel wells, and I ran a 235/50/17 tire in front and rear with no issues. I can't remember the backspace on the rim in the back, though they were deep dish American Torque Thrust ll wheels. I probably could've fit 255/50/17 in the back, but never tried as I went up to 18" rims on the back and a Ford 9"... Good luck

I would measure the inner wheel well to the inner fender lip,
You will find that a 9" wide tire is all you can get in there, this mean even a 8.5" tread with a 9" side wall.
An 8" wide rim is about all, back spacing is the key.
A 15" , 20" or what ever tire does not matter, max side wall will be about 9".

The wheel diameter has nothing to do with what fits. What counts is tire section width.

You can put 275 wide tires on any 55-57 with the right wheel offset.

Having said that, it may be difficult to get them on/off the car. Actually a bigger diameter wheel may make that easier.
