I am changing the oil(fluid) in the transmission (5 speed with overdrive manual) and I cant figure it out what kind to use, the fluid listed on the manual is not longer manufactured, anybody knows what brand/grade to replace it with?

thanks

Both 5 speeds available at that time have 5th as overdrive. The difference is whether you have a low (L) first gear, or regular first gear. Low gear is the heavy duty NV4500 which was optional in 1500's but rarely seen in them. It requires GM Synthetic Transmission Lubricant part # 12346190

5 speed with regular 1st gear is the light duty transmission (NV3500, 5LM60, Getrag, several names/versions) and they use Syncromesh fluid. It is available in many brands. It is still available from GM (AC Delco) part # 10-4006

I looked at the casting numbers and they are GM 8679097 so it seems to be an NV3500, reading your comments synchromesh fluid is used for this transmission, I read some comments online about people using royal purple fluid and adding some lucas oil too, has anybody tried this with the 5 speed transmission? also how much oil does it take to fill it up to the fill plug?

thanks
Sal

Also original GM part# 12345349 Apparently it's still available.

Pennzoil made the fluid and also sold it under their name as Penzoil Syncromesh 3501.
