Do you have to lower the gas tank to install
the new sending unit?

NO just alittle tougher to get it removed but it can be done I have done it this way before. Just jack up the rear end as high as you can and remove the screws wire and gas tank unit there is plenty of room if you are skinny LOL

I replaced mine while the car just sat on the garage floor.
It wasn't that bad - it took me about an hour. I needed a clutch-head socket set (or C.H. screwdriver) on my '55.
I assume that you'll need the same on a '56. If you don't have one, you could probably use a vice grip or even grind a large screwdriver or a hex bit to fit the clutch-head screws.
