My 63 2 door hardtop 283 randomly shuts off on me. It has happened at a red light and even when I'm rolling down the street. When i try to start it back up it doesn't even turn over or make any type of sound, just nothing. I believe the oil light comes on but thats it. Usually after cursing up a storm, a dozen push and pulls of the headlight knob and some wiggling of the negative cable, it starts(usually 3-5 minutes later). Sometimes I make it to wherever I'm going but it won't turnover when I get back in it to leave(but eventually does). It seems electrical but I'm not sure, plus I don't know much about that. I cleaned the surface of the ground area with a wire brush but not sure if it did anything since it still shuts off at random. Any advice would be super awesome, just please talk slow

The electrical weak point on these cars are the at firewall connections. This is where the front light harness and engine harnesses connect to the fuse box. The are held on by two plastic clips that can easily break or warp. I would start there to make sure your connection is solid. It sounds like you have already checked over your negative battery cable. Just make sure the connection to the engine block is good.

I agree with Shane on the firewall connection. Mine was bad when I bought my 61 and it would do similar things until I replaced the wiring harness.

Why buy when you can build it better?

If jacking around with the battery ground cable helps to get it to restart, I think I'd start by replacing the cable and go from there. I've seen them where they were corroded thru on the inside of the insulation.

I'd repeat those firewall connections.

I went to clean those once, the whole clip was so brittle it shattered in my hand.

Since it was my daily driver, and it happened on a weeknight, I spliced all the wires and crimped them together just so I could get to work the next day. That was about 2 years ago, no issues since.

cheers
