I need guidance on removing a stock gas tank on a 56 Belair. I need to check the inside to see if things are clogged.

unhook the wire to the sending unit, disconnect the gas line that goes to the tank.
Undo both gas tank straps pull tank off the filler neck
I just did my 57 all is fresh right now.
A lift car lift would be nice. I know !!!! I have one.

I would drain gas. Be very careful when working with your sending unit. Very easy to break the fragile soldering where tube goes into unit. Good luck.

I have taken my tank off my 57 at least 3 times. When the imported sending unit stops sending because the brass float gets a pin hole in it, that's frustrating. I suggest you look for a plastic float while the sending unit is out. It's been about 6 years ago I replaced it, there was a Ford thick plastic float that fit perfectly.

I know that I am particular, but, from a completely empty tank, I added 1 gallon from can, then tried to start. Then added 1/2 gallon at a time and try to start it, to determine how much was below the suck line. Then make a pictorial of your gage and note on it where your needle is. I chose to add 1 gallon at a time noting where the gage needle on my diagram until completely full. This way, when I am traveling, I can always tell how many USABLE gallons I have left, times my 14 mpg gives me range.
