In searching for answers to an air cleaner question below I keep seeing hood clearance issues which concerns me. Does anyone know how much clearance there is when using a stock air cleaner and a Carter 4bbl on a 57 Bel Air?

I searched back for the posts you referring to without success.

You are replacing a four barrel carb for the NOS carter you reference and you have resolved the 4.5 to 5 spacer issue. So, measuring the height of the old carb to new, my bet is they are identical, won’t that answer your question?

Unfortunately no. The car, a freebie, came with a 2 bbl carb. I am told the car codes to be a 283 with a 4 bbl. (engine stamped T1121FC). When and where it got changed is lost to history.

I would say from my experience, there is about enough room for the oil cap between the hood and air cleaner. When I got my 57, the undercoating on the underside had the "OIL" imprint in it from someone previously forgetting to reinstall the oil cap when they closed the hood. The hood was not dented in this area from this happening.

I used to run a 4 barrel(modified for power)in the summer and then run a 2brl and intake for economy in the winter. Gas was $.25 per gallon.
