Want to change the ‘spaceship’ oil filter over to a paper or foam type. Have no idea what size filter nor what needs to be done to accomplish this. Reason: I don’t have the insides or oil bath and a PO modified the lower housing fit a later carb.
The major suppliers don’t seem to address this issue in their catalogs unless I missed it. 1957 283 c.i. with Carter 4bbl. (4-7/32”). Thanks.

Probably have to clean it up and go to a parts store that will take the time to dig through their supply and trial fit the elements until one fits. JMHO

We do that same thing with radiator hoses when we drop a non stock motor into a engine bay. I’ve cut sections out of some pricey rubber to get what I need. I guess I’m off to my FLAPS.

Are you trying to keep the original cleaner and just retro fit a modern element, or just want a paper filter setup? You can get aftermarket chrome air cleaners, like Mr. Gasket, but you'll need an adaptor for the WCFB. If you go this route, use the plastic adaptor for a template to make a metal one, as the first time it backfires, the plastic one will melt!

What I’m trying to do is keep the original outside looks of the air cleaner while upgrading to a paper element. I don’t have the insides and the carb hole has been enlarged to 5”. I have reworked a plastic adapter for a pattern. I see no options other than a paper/foam air filter for the inside.
I would think many tri-five owners have made this changeover much like the spin on oil filter.

Thanks much guys. I will visit my FLAPS in the next couple of days with the above information. Got talked into help pulling the engine out of a 64 Chevy truck today and more tomorrow by my nephew. I jump at any chance to help the next generation learn to love and work on vehicles with carburetors.
Bone stock except for dual master cylinder.
