Gents,

Catalog shopping, saw wiring harness for lock up converter for my transmission. Frankly, I don’t understand why or if I need this. My assumption is this feature is like the over drive delete button on my Bronco. When activated it downshifts out of over drive, increases rpm, and I guess prevents it from going into OD. Am I close?

This transmission has a 2500 stall converter. Or, is this more for launch control.

If you can’t tell, my background is not in building fast cars.

Your speculation is incorrect, in fact you're thinking opposite of what it is.

A stock OEM 700-R4 has a lock up torque converter. The lockup feature eliminates slippage in the torque converter at highway speeds. This increases transmission efficiency, lowers engine rpm, and this increases gas mileage.

Not only that, unless the transmission has been modified to eliminate lockup, not wiring it up will burn up the transmission early on as there is no cooling flow to the torque converter in overdrive gear.

In other words you need it.

The wiring for the lockup can be done several ways. A given wiring harness needs to be matched to the other lockup components like pressure switches and lockup solenoids.

Definitely get this done. The transmission pan will need to be pulled to verify the internal wiring and components unless your transmission builder can tell you what he used.

My 700r4 is setup with internal lockup, no external wiring. Nothing special just the builder asked if I wanted internal or external. He said it would be a simple change to add external if I didn't like what I have. I have been happy for 10+ years.

Thanks for the education! And, glad I asked.

Will look at my receipt to see if noted there and if not will then contact my transmission shop.
