Has anyone ever tried to remove a window crank spring? I'd like to take it off to deal with the rust and for lubrication. My concern is that I might not be able to get it re-tensioned.

I've never removed one, but I'm ALWAYS up to a challenge. My first inclination is to figure out how difficult or how much tension / load is in the spring and in what position there is the least amount of tension or load. Once that is determined, how easy / difficult is it to pry back off of the stop. If relatively easy to pull / push back off of the stop...half the battle is won. Looks MUCH easier than doing hood springs.

There has been some discussion on here about using a spooge tank to remove rust. It's an electrolysis process. That way you could leave the spring attached. I agree with the others that it might turn into a can of worms if you remove it which would be easier than getting it back on.

I’ve replaced them before. Grab the end of the spring with a pair of vise grips and wind the spring up over the stop then pull it out and slowly unwind it. As you start to pull it off of the stop you will know how much tension is on it. It’s manageable.

Thanks for lending me your experience. Where do you get a replacement spring? I was going to derust this one and try a metal bluing process, or perhaps a plating process to stop future rust. But a new part would be a lot better.

I pulled one off of an extra regulator I had lying around.

There is a tremendous amount of stored energy in a window crank spring. When I worked in the glass shop, many moons ago we NEVER messed with them. Too easy to lose a finger.

1953 210 Convertible, 261 with dual Carter YF 966S carbs, P.S., Remote Bendix P.B. Booster... shade-tree restoration about done.

I hear you, Robert. Last night, I made this tool to remove the spring. Went to take it out this morning...and finally came to my senses. I will live with a little rust (and both eyes). Thanks for the caution.

Good choice Scott. I've removed automotive coil springs, using a good spring compressor, but the trouble with the window spring is it is small and VERY robust. Thus it can get away from you pretty easily. With something like a suspension coil spring, it's big enough that you can get a good sized spring compressor on it so it can't get away. Maybe a holder like that would work but if it doesn't... ouch. ;-)

I tried the Evapo-Rust product. In general, I am very pleased with its performance. It is slow acting, but very effective. Thanks for the suggestion.
