I have a 67 SS that after many years am finally starting to put back together after getting it back from the body shop. Since I didn't take it apart it is somewhat of a challenge even though I have all the manuals & catalogs. My question is how do I tell the difference between a long & a short water pump & what should/can I have on the 67 with 396. The new pump I bought matches the length of the one that was on the engine but the pulley grooves don't line up. I don't think the pump that came with the car was ever used tho & the pulley may have been just thrown in. The car will have power steering. This is probably the first of many questions to come. Thanks for any help & have a good day

67 Chevelles all engines use a short water pump. Do your pumps have a casting number?

The pump that came with the engine is A2?8 with some kind of marks before & after. Couldn't read the 3rd. There was also a 8868284. I am assuming this was the right one for the car but??
The one I bought was a new aftermarket. The length of the new one matches the old one but the pulley grooves don't line up is what had me wondering as there are other things wrong or missing with parts that came with the car. Thanks for the reply

The original casting for 65 to 68 is 3856284 and will measure 6 inches from the block to the face where the pulley sits. A long pump measures 7.5 inches to the same points.

Are they off just a little bit? You can take the cover off of the back of the water pump the move the shaft one direction or another to line up the pulleys. You probably need to use a press.

I have the short pump as it measures 6". I didn't know if the pulley was right for my application so I ordered one from Ground Up thinking that would fix it. It lined up worse & when I spaced it out to where it lined up it interfered with the crank pulley by a quarter inch or so. Sent it back & am cooling off while I try to get other things done. Sorry for the late reply & thanks for your replies. 3 steps forward & 1 step back most days.

I forgot to add that I am trying to find a Chevelle with 396 or picture that shows the pump & drive pulleys. Also the same picture or Chevelle with air conditioning which is the pulley that I think that I have - maybe???

I have a 67 SS Chevelle but don't think pictures are going to do you any good. Can you give us the part numbers on the pulleys you have?

351?8JAA It's a dual pulley, the only one that I know I have. The ? looks kind of like a small 0. Didn't realize there was a # on the pulley. I did notice yesterday that I hadn't tightened up the bottom pulley & that looks like it will help. Cleaned up the bolts & painted, will asm today. Where do you find part numbers & do a lot of the parts have them on the part? I need all the pictures I can get as I have never worked on a 67 Chevelle before & I didn't take most of it apart & what I did take apart was 12-15 years ago. Thanks for your help.

I put the bolts in & torqued & it helped but by the way I checked it is still about a tenth of an inch too deep. Might work but I want it to be right. Will check to see how thick the spacers are that they sell. If not right will have to make one. I am sure this is the first of many questions I will have. Thanks again
