I’m repacking the front wheel bearings for my first time. The new seal has a lip on the o.d. of about 1/16”. The old seal had no lip. Does that lip go toward the hub, the backing plate, or does it matter? This is the bearing grease seal that goes up against the backing plate. 1957, but I think all tri fives apply.

Sorry, that lip is on the i.d. of the seal, not the o.d.

That's what I hoped you meant. The lip should face toward the bearing (or away from the backing plate).
