Im looking for what other people have used for an ignition switch in place of the floor button. I have a 48 fleetline. I had to get rid of the floor button. I'm looking for an original look on the dash and would like a key start. Is there a 50's or later ignition that would slide right in?

Thanks I

Ok, so specifically you wish to get rid of the foot-operated starter, correct? The easiest fix would be a push-button starter switch such as was used 49-52. If that's not acceptable, you could use a "universal" key-start switch, available from almost any parts store, and of course online. If you want a switch that takes a GM key, you could look at a 53-54, but you would have to cobble the mount, and I'm not sure it would pass for stock.

Thanks Ray. Yes I had to get rid of push starter. I'm wanting to have a key start but I don't want to drill the dash out. Will anything work with the existing hole?

The universal switch will have a smaller diameter mounting shank than the 53-54. You might want to inspect one at a parts store, measure the shank, and see how it compares with the existing dash hole.

Interesting. Why did you have to get rid of the foot operated starter?

I put in a 350 turbo tranny so I had to change the tunnel. Things didn't line up anymore.

That explains it. Good luck with your switch search.

Look on the bottom edge of your dash. GM put a few extra holes under there for a variety of accessories. you might be able to use an existing hole with maybe a little enlarging to install a starter button. it would be pretty much out of sight and you could keep the same key switch.

I did exactly that on a 47 coupe I installed a 56 V8 running gear. This was in 1967 while I was in the Navy. Starter button on the left side on the bottom edge of the dash.
