Ok, 63 SS could be had with any engine. But, could you get it from the factory with a column shift and if you could would it have the center console sans floor shift plate?

Hemmings says the 1963 3 speed SS had a block-off plate in the console where the shifter would have normally come through, and I am not about to dispute such an authority as they.

https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hcc/2015/11/ Supe...

However, I have seen exactly one SS with a column shift 3 speed that didn't have a full console. It had a hump-mounted storage compartment with cover and light, but was missing the forward part where a floor shifter would have come through. Unfortunately, I can't remember what model year it was. If anyone else here knows about such a car and what year it would have been, I would very much appreciate seeing his/her input.

Yep. The standard trans was a 3-spd and if it came on a Super Sport, it would be normally be part of the steering column. No floor mounted 3-spd shifters.

I documented a St Louis 63 SS V8 with 3 speed and it had the short console (see photo). It also had a different code on the cowl tag which I believe was for the short console.

Bear, Carl, Verne,

Thanks for the responses and the pic too!! The AIM isn't real clear as it shows the SS package (Section Z03) and doesn't list the the shift plate/trim as optional based on trans.
Always nice to learn something new.

Thanks!!
Mike

My dad ordered a 63 SS 2 dr htp, 300hp 327, 3 speed. We were told in December that there was a temporary hold on 327 4 speed cars, but we could have ordered a 409. My dad refused to order a 409. The 327 4 speed cars became available again in February when the Muncie transmissions became available. Our car was built at Janesville in January 1963. It had a column shift, bucket seats, and no console box or plate. I was 15 years old and learned to drive in this car. Our neighbor had a 62 SS convertible with a 235 six and a 3 speed column shift, but I don't remember if it had a console.

Carl, yours looks pretty much like the one I was talking about, although I still can't remember if the one I saw was a 63 or a different year.

So does this mean that Hemmings was wrong, or is it possible that both versions were actually standard production and which one the buyer got depended on parts availability or on which plant built the body?

As far as I know, in 1963 all SS with 4 speed or auto got the long console and floor shift, and all 3 speed manual SS got the short console. I think in 64 all SS got the long console, but it had a blank if the car was a 3 speed column shift. Verne can confirm.

Cheers, Carl.

My 1964 SS was originally 3 speed column shift before the previous owner converted it to a 4 speed floor shift. I was looking at on older picture of when I had the interior out of the car at it appears the factory console floor tabs were a bit further towards the front of the car. That makes me think they may all have come with a long console in 1964. I can's say for sure as I never saw the car before the 4 speed was installed. I'm sure Verne will know.

Correct on the '63s. This is a '64 SS with 3-spd. The lid opens to a storage compartment.

MANY years ago (AT LEAST 25yrs) at the Chickasha, OK swap meet, there was a 63 SS, 6cyl, 3sp column car for sale. As I remember, it was bucket seats and short console (in 62-later, ALL SS cars had buckets regardless of engine/tranny). I only took a cursory look at it, but it appeared to be a genuine article. I CANNOT imagine someone faking a 6cyl SS!!!! But I can imagine someone faking a car, such as an SS, into a larger engine and 4sp. Over the years, I've seen som many things that were of no interest to me, so I did not bother to take pictures. Oh well--------------------- ---------

Was there a factory option 3sp floor shifter? Our '70 Nova was ordered that way.

Yes, in other models. My neighbor had a '66 Pontiac Sprint with a Hurst factory 3-spd on the floor for example. None in '58-'64 full size though.
