A customer wants an under-sink 2gal water heater installed because they want instant hot water in the morning. Can I use the hot water supply to supply the water heater? Instructions say to connect to cold water supply.

Unless you plan to have a third valve just for the new heater, you have to use the hot. The supplemental heater won’t run much, but it will meet the need until the primary feed dumps the cooler water from the line and it will all be hot.

That's almost exactly what I did when I installed a point-of-use heater for the same purpose. The only difference is that I used a tankless heater instead of a tank type. I still get instant hot water, but I'm not consuming power to keep the tank hot between uses.

I wish the customer went with a tankless type.
