Starting the install of new wiring harness in 56, caused a flash back to my back breaking days of trying to reach the dang thing up and under the dash. So, has anyone moved the fuse box and where did you place it?
Glove box comes to mind.
Plan to install or build center console, place up near firewall, but inside the yet to be built console.

The location of the fuse box will dictate what wiring harness you use and vise versa. If you use a harness designed for your car, the length of the wires will dictate where the box can be located.
I bought my first tri-5 in 1957 and drove it till 1968 with about 200,000 miles on it and never knew where the fuse block was. I never replaced a fuse in it. My 57 has been on the road 7 years and hasn't blown a fuse yet, so it's something you normally don't do that often.

As don says, how often do you replace a fuse?
I agree the fuse box/panel locations is not good, that looking up laying on the seat is not fun.
The new car location in a side panel of the dash has us spoiled? Thinking?
With some work it is possible to relocate the old/ new fuse box/panel.
Where would you put it?
Like you suggest behind the glove box.
Or would you put it in the trunk? You have seen the 100+ fuse boxes from the newer trucks cars ?
Yeah but like Don says, I have never replaced a fuse in my '56.
It would be cool to have a trunk set up, would I do it?
Maybe, can I splice wires, heat shrink wires?
I can.
Just something to think about, I hate laying on my back and looking up, do I hate it that much?
I do, thanks for the idea!

Dang, now I'm thinking how could I do this?
I do have all the correct painless wire colors?
I do have an Ungar?
I have 8 million or so feet of shrink tubing?
I 8 million pounds of soldier?
Lol, now how do I make a presentable panel in the trunk?
What's an Ungar?

If you want it in the trunk, Painless makes a wire harness for that.

A former neighbor of mine had one built and installed in the trunk on the deck between the rear wheels. The installer built a wood mount raised off the floor using what looked like 1" furniture posts. He then fabricated a box using ABS which he had heat formed into a rectangle to fit around the base with the opening facing the back seat where the wires were routed out then using large Audio grommets they were routed through the floor into a conduit that ran to the front of the car along the inside top edge of the frame rail then back under the dash through another Audio grommet. He built an aluminum cover with a clear plexiglass insert on the top. A very clean installation. If I ever rewire my '56 again I will copy it.

Same here, it is a bit more work, but well worth the effort, I can't stand that looking up laying on your back thing,
I'm glad someone brought this up.
I won't explain why.

Hello;
Me again, chiming in on this near and dear subject!
When everybody talks about re wiring, they suppose that you get a fuse block pre wired!
There is one Co. that comes to my mind that is not that way! Ron Francis Wiring! (been around for a long time) They produce several kinds of wiring kits all have a fuse box mountable anywhere as you run your wires to the fuse box (not from, like most) and mount the wires to the box.
Im in no way associated with these folks but I do know a couple guys that have used their kits and everybody seems to think highly of the products.
