I might build a 468 out of my 454. Are they bored 30 over or 60 over?

displacement formula

bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders x .7854
examples

4.030 x 4.030 x 3.75 x 8 x .7854= 383

4.31 x 4.31 x .4.0 x 8 x .7854= 466.8

Got to thinking. Who makes a 496 kit?? That might be an idea also. I’ve seen on eBay there’s a kit or two but don’t know what they are like. They come with a crank or can I have the machine shop turn mine to work.

Only if you want to use your block up all at once. I would bore it as little as possible. Boring is not a good way to get more displacement. You don't get enough to make a difference. If you want more displacement you'll want to stroke it.

Ok, I’m all ears. What’s the minimum I can bore it and still stroke it??

.03 over is generally considered a standard over bore size and fitting a 4.25" stroke crank is not difficult
reading the links and sub-links helps

The minimum you can bore is whatever amount cleans up the bore and find piston/rings... it depends on the condition of your engine, and parts availability.

Edit: Usually people go .030", as Grumpy said. I'd guess that's probably due to part's availability.

It's got nothing to do with the stroke.

I used a Scat 496 kit, includes crank, rods, pistons, bearings.

Scat list a 489 kit - the 496 is the same part number but 030" over. The part number for mine was 1-91510BI-030

I went for the cast crank which is good up to about 700 hp I think.

before you buy components talk to both the vendors and your machine shop of choice , you damn sure don,t want mis-matched components and clearances.
you need to measure accurately, know what your current block will function correctly with and pay attention to clearances and other details that make or break the engines potential durability and power potential.
