Hi all.As the title says,i have no brake lights and running lights.I do have reverse lights and indicators-turn signals. This happened after my external voltage regulator died and put 16.9volts thru everything!I have another regulator and up-graded to a 63amp alternator!I have found on the wiring harness that goes to the multi switch in the steering column,a white wire has got hot and heated the plug! This the possible problem? Sorry for the long post!

White wires are usually dome lights and are found at the ends of the door switches and ground when you open a door. I would venture to say that your headlamp switch might have been cooked. The reason for the white wires being melted, is most likely they were the path to ground. If you have no running (taillights), then you also don't have any dash lights. I would start with checking all the fuses with a test light on both sides of the fuse. I have seen fuses that look good, but are blown. The brake lights might be burned out bulbs, and since they are both tail and brake, it is possible that the high voltage has burned out both filaments. Rear stop, directional, tail, and front parking and directional, are all 1157 clear bulbs. The back up lights use a 1156 single filament bulb. Also check all the rest of the lighting. I would do all the simple checks first, and then move onto fixing wiring last. Make sure that you have good grounding of the engine to the cowl and the chassis.

Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.

Hi.I have headlights and park lights.Tried a new headlight switch and still no go.Bulbs in the rear are all good and i tested the fuses and all good. The white wire that the plug looks sunken-melted is on the 7-pin plug down from the steering wheel.I will do more checking this weekend.Thanks.

The white wire at the turn signal connector is the switched power coming from the brake light switch to the turn signal switch. Something wrong with that wire would cause the brake lights to not work.

Brake and signal are the same filament bulb. So, if the rear signals work then the brake issue must be in the turn signal switch or in the brake switch and wiring that goes into the turn signal switch.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say you have parking lights but no tail lights?

Tail lights are a brown wire going to the rear, and you can find it at the firewall connector for the under carpet ribbon. I'd start then and figure out if it's a problem under the dash or in the wiring going to the rear of the car.

Thanks for the reply.I meant i have all lights in the front, sorry for the confusion!.I have pulled and tested one tail light/brake light bulb from the rear and it worked...so i am guessing they are ok.Again will check later this morning.I can borrow a friends brake switch from his 66 Impala to confirm that mine is working.May try testing the plug with the white wire to see if power is going thru!
Once again thank you all for your help!
Philip

No need to borrow another brake switch. Just unplug the connector from the switch and jump the contacts with a short piece of wire. Also, while you have the connector off the switch, you should check to make sure you are getting 12V on one of the contacts.

UPDATE....After trying everything here,i again tested-pulled fuses and looked checked the power and lo and behold the fuse that i had checked for being burnt and had tested ok,broke as i pulled it out for the ?? time!Put a new fuse in and the lights work! Strange as i had swapped that fuse with another earlier!I hope that is my problem! Now i have the transmission dropping out of drive into 2nd by itself! The fun of old cars!!!
Thanks to all!
